Micro Machines
A modern Micro Machines car measures about 1.5 inches long. That is small enough to keep dozens on a single shelf, and small enough that a playset can fold an entire city into something you carry in one hand.
Are Micro Machines Still Made?
Yes. The line came back in 2020 and the modern range is in production, sold under license by Wicked Cool Toys, a Jazwares company, working with Hasbro. New Starter Packs, World Packs and transforming playsets have shipped since.
The name survived every handoff. The products did not. Packaging, wheel construction, paint application and vehicle selection all differ between an original Galoob piece and a modern Jazwares release, which makes a 1990s car and its modern counterpart two separate collectibles even when they represent the same real vehicle.
1987
Galoob launches Micro Machines commercially and expands fast across cars, aircraft, boats, trains and licensed properties.
1998
Hasbro announces the acquisition of Galoob in September, in a deal valued at roughly $220 million, and completes it on October 30.
2015
Hasbro revives Star Wars Micro Machines around The Force Awakens with three-packs, larger assortments, blind products and playsets.
2020
A broader relaunch arrives through Wicked Cool Toys, a Jazwares company, working under license with Hasbro. Starter Packs, World Packs and Super Van City return.
2022
Transformers joins the modern range through a Jazwares crossover, translating character vehicle modes into the Micro Machines format.

Check availabilityHow Big Is a Micro Machine?
About 1.5 inches, or 3.8 cm, for a modern passenger car. That puts the whole line well under the common 1:64 die-cast size that most people picture when they think of a small toy car.
Length shifts with the subject. A dump truck, a locomotive and an aircraft cannot share proportions with a sports car, so the line holds every vehicle inside a narrow size band instead of reproducing each one at one exact ratio. A Corvette and a construction truck end up looking right next to each other without being mathematically proportional to the real thing.
| Micro Machines | 1:64 die-cast | 1:43 model | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical car length | About 1.5 in (3.8 cm) | About 2.5 to 3 in (6.5 to 7.5 cm) | About 4 in (10 cm) |
| Scale ratio | No single fixed ratio across the line | Nominally 1:64 | Nominally 1:43 |
| Cars across a 12 in shelf | Roughly eight | Roughly four | Roughly three |
| What the sets add | Connected Micro City environments and playsets that fold shut | Track sets and single buildings | Display cases and single dioramas |
| Suits | Large fleets and whole layouts in very little space | Mixed play and casual collecting | Detailed display models |
What the small size buys you
- A five-vehicle pack fits in a coat pocket
- Several cars line up across the front of a monitor
- Playsets carry roads and destinations, not just cars
- A whole fleet travels in a small container
- Display space stays open for larger 1:18 or 1:43 models
Licensed Cars, Chase Variants and Vintage Galoob
Licensed automotive
General Motors was the first major automotive license of the 2020 relaunch, bringing Chevrolet, Cadillac and Pontiac into themed packs. Bugatti followed. The 2023 Classic Muscle World Pack held a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, a 1963 Corvette, a 1968 Nova, a 1969 Mustang and a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, each around 1.5 inches long.
Rare, Ultra-Rare and Treasure
The modern revival brought chase collecting back through special finishes. Silver marks Rare vehicles and gold marks Ultra-Rare, with ruby Treasure variants in selected assortments. The casting underneath is often the standard one, so the finish and the assortment placement create the rarity. A pack with a chase chance is not a pack with a chase guarantee.
Star Wars and Transformers
Galoob produced tiny Star Wars ships, figure packs, transforming environments and Action Fleet through the 1990s. Hasbro revived the line in 2015. Jazwares now makes Micro Galaxy Squadron, a separate microscale brand that is not the same series. The 2022 Transformers crossover renders character vehicle modes at Micro Machines size rather than working robot-to-vehicle figures.
Vintage Galoob
The original catalog went far past cars: aircraft, boats, military equipment, novelty series and trains. Galoob released train collections in 1989 with names such as Continental Bullet, High Speed Bullet and Transcontinental Freight, usually five pieces per pack. Insiders hid an even smaller vehicle inside a standard Micro Machine, and Private Eyes revealed an image through a viewing feature.
Series numbers can matter as much as vehicle names. The same casting reappears with different paint, packaging or rarity across releases, so identify a loose car from the markings on its underside plus the casting, paint scheme and wheels, never from the model name on its own.
Buying Micro Machines for a Child
Modern packs carry a 4+ marking and a choking-hazard warning for small parts. The marking printed on the package you receive is the one that counts, because it varies by set and by market.
Keep loose vehicles away from anyone still putting objects in their mouth. Playset accessories run smaller than the cars themselves, so flags, signs and connector pieces are the parts to watch.
For children inside the stated range, a playset does more than add scenery. Roads, parking bays and storage slots give every car a place to be, which is the difference between an organized collection and a handful of cars lost in a toy bin.
Caring for Micro Machines
Storage
Keep loose vehicles from rubbing against each other. Painted surfaces and printed decoration wear when a box of cars is shaken or carried around. Compartment cases separate individual cars and make a large collection far quicker to search.
Cleaning
A soft brush or microfiber cloth clears dust. Stubborn dirt comes off with a lightly damp cloth, then dry the vehicle. Solvents and aggressive household cleaners attack paint, decals and plastic, so leave them out of it.
Vintage pieces
Prolonged heat and direct sunlight accelerate warping, discoloration and adhesive failure. Plastics, stickers and card backing have already aged for decades, and old packaging suffers first.
Water
Only use water with a product built for it. A miniature vehicle shaped like a boat is not automatically designed to float.

This is a very cool set! My 10 yr old loved it. You have to set it up to play and the extra pieces can’t be stored inside, but it is very fun and will be played with a lot.

My boys love these. Just like how I remembered them when my brothers were young. My boys are between 3 and 6

This is the cutest set of trucks. My grandson loved it. The trucks are all so well made and the carrier is awesome.

Frequently Asked Questions About Micro Machines
Micro Machines are miniature toy vehicles and playsets built around an intentionally tiny format. The brand has covered cars, race vehicles, trucks, construction equipment, trains, aircraft, military vehicles and licensed entertainment properties across different generations. Modern passenger cars are often around 1.5 inches long, so a substantial collection can fit into a relatively small display or storage area. The vehicles can be collected individually or used with Micro City environments, tracks and transforming playsets.
Three Cars, or a Whole Micro City
A collection can start with one Starter Pack and grow into connected playsets, licensed automotive series, chase finishes or vintage Galoob releases. The vehicles stay about 1.5 inches long the whole way.
